Tips To Help You Pack Your Self Storage Unit Properly

Blog

Taking your valuable items to a self storage unit may not be something you want to do, but something done more out of necessity. Maybe you're in the middle of a move and need to take your things somewhere until you find a permanent home. Maybe you've recently moved back home and simply don't have the space for your things in your parent's home. Whatever your reason for needing a storage unit, packing it properly will mean the difference between your things staying in good condition, or being ruined because of a simple packing mistake. See below for some helpful tips to use.

1. Keep Appliances Clean

If storing appliances such as refrigerators or freezers, or even small appliances like microwaves and toasters, be sure to give them a deep clean. This will help to prevent bugs and mold. To help keep moisture from building up, keep a container of salt inside of your refrigerator and freezer to help absorb moisture.

2. Drain Gas And Oil

For your outdoor items like lawnmowers, tillers and snowblowers, be sure to drain the gas and oil. This will help ensure that your gas and oil will not go bad, which can damage your garden or landscaping tool's engine. It's also good to do, just in case there's a leak, it won't ruin anything else you have stored in your unit.

3. Store Mirrors And Televisions On Edge

Be sure to store your mirrors and flat panel televisions on their edge, not flat. This will help ensure they will not get broken if something happens to get stacked on top of it by mistake. To help prevent scratching, pack them with a heavier cardboard, mark them as fragile, and do not lay them flat on the cardboard.

4. Protect Upholstered Furniture

Protect your upholstered furniture and mattresses by covering them with a heavy plastic. You can usually find mattress covers at your local self storage facility. The plastic will help prevent insects from making their way to your furniture. It also helps protect them from smells, mold and mildew.

5. Leave Walkways And Space

Be sure to leave walkways between your items to give you a path to get to anything in the back of your unit if need be. Also be sure to keep space between the walls of the unit and your boxes. This will help ensure a good air flow throughout your self storage unit. A good flow of air will help prevent moisture.

Packing your storage unit properly will help to ensure your items are protected while in storage, and that they come out the same way they went in. If you're looking for a self storage facility in your area, visit Allsafe & Storaway Self Storage.
